The Observer in the Birth Chart: Astrology and A Course in Miracles

By Dehyana

A few days ago, as I was reading a client’s astrology chart, she asked me a really good question.

She said,

“I’m also a student of A Course in Miracles… and I’m wondering something. Do I really need to know my chart if it’s all ego anyway? If the ego isn’t real, why study it? Shouldn’t I just keep it simple and say to the Holy Spirit, ‘I let this go’?”

It was a sincere question — and a good one at that.

Most spiritual growth — especially in astrology — is framed as moving from the “lower” expression of a sign to the “higher.” From reactive to conscious. From defended to open. From fear to love.

And that growth matters.

A Scorpio who stops controlling and starts trusting has grown.
A Leo who moves from needing validation to offering warmth has grown.
A Virgo who softens perfectionism into service has grown.

But something subtle still remains.

There is something astrology cannot describe — the observer in the birth chart.

It is still the character in the dream… just refined. The higher expression is the personality aligned with love instead of fear. But it is still a personality.

Astrology Reveals the Pattern — Not the Observer

Astrology maps that structure beautifully. As I’ve shared in recent reflections, it shows us how we defend, how we protect, how we seek safety and how we shine. It can even describe how we evolve.

But it cannot describe the observer in the birth chart — the one who is aware of all of it.

In A Course in Miracles, we’re told the ego is a self-concept — an idea of who we think we are. A structure made of memory, habit and identification. Astrology describes that self-concept with astonishing precision.

But here’s what’s important to remember.

The Course does not ask us to pretend the ego isn’t operating. It asks us to look at it without fear.

And that’s a very different thing.

Astrology does not make the ego real. It makes the pattern visible.

And if you’re going to say, “Holy Spirit, I let this go,” it helps to know what “this” is.

When astrology is used unconsciously, it can reinforce identity:

“This is just how I am.”

But when astrology is held in awareness, it becomes a mirror:

“Oh… there’s the impulse to control.”
“Oh… there’s the need to be seen.”
“Oh… there’s the instinct to withdraw.”

That shift — from identification to observation — is everything.

The personality can continue evolving. It can soften. It can mature. It can choose love more consistently.

I’ve watched my own patterns soften over the years — and I’ve also watched something deeper in me remain untouched.

You are not confined to the structure of your chart. Even the most enlightened version of your sign is still a lens.

The chart describes the character.

But the observer in the birth chart is prior to the character.

That observer — that quiet presence that notices without defending — is not elemental. It is not housed. It does not sit in a placement.

It simply is.

Astrology describes the structure of the self-concept. The observer in the birth chart is not that structure. A Course in Miracles reminds us we are not the self-concept at all.

When held together, something beautiful happens.

You stop defending your sign.
You stop spiritualising your reactions.
You stop trying to perfect the character.

You simply notice.

And in that noticing, the grip loosens.

That’s where astrology becomes a classroom.
And presence becomes the teacher.

Continue the Exploration

If this reflection resonates, I invite you deeper.

At the Spring Equinox, I’ll be guiding a live workshop that brings together Astrology and A Course in Miracles — exploring the birth chart as a lens for understanding the character in the dream, and the Course as the framework for seeing beyond it.

This is not about prediction.
It is about awareness.
It is about learning to recognise the pattern without mistaking it for yourself.

If you’re ready to explore your chart — not as identity, but as a classroom — I would love to have you join us.

If you feel called to something more personal, you can also book a Private Astrology Reading, where we explore your birth chart one-to-one — not to reinforce identity, but to illuminate what can now be seen and released.

Each offering is simply a different doorway into the same invitation:

Know thyself.
And discover the one who is prior to the knowing.

With love,
Dehyana
