The Hands of the Cosmos
Discovering the Spiritual Meaning of Dreams
By Dehyana
Have you ever had a dream that never leaves you? One that feels etched into your bones, quietly waiting in your soul until the right moment to return with a message as alive today as the day you dreamed it? These are not ordinary dreams. They are spiritual dreams—doorways into the higher self that reveal the soul’s connection to the divine.
More than thirty years ago, I had one of those dreams.
A Classroom of Light
In the dream, I was a teacher in a small rural school in India. It was a bright, sunny day, and the children were laughing and playing outside. As I watched them, a colleague approached and said:
“Sai Baba wants to talk to you.”
Immediately my heart sank. Conditioned by the religion of guilt, my first thought was, “Oh no, what have I done wrong?” That ancient voice of unworthiness still lived somewhere deep in my DNA.
But I said, “Okay.”
Then he came. Baba floated into the classroom, moving with the lightness of one who is more spirit than flesh. He sat behind the teacher’s desk as though it were his rightful place and motioned for me to sit beside him.
“Sit, sit, sit,” he said in that familiar, affectionate way.
The Revelation of His Hands
He looked into my eyes and asked,
“So you want to be a Buddhist monk?”
Before I could answer, he smiled and said,
“It’s okay. Before I became Sai Baba, I was a Buddhist monk.”
Then he extended his hands toward me, palms up.
“See,” he said.
On one palm I saw the sun and the earth; on the other, the moon and the stars. At first I thought they were tattoos and said, “Oh Baba, those are beautiful tattoos!” He laughed gently.
“No. Look again.”
As I looked closer, they came alive—the earth spinning on its axis, the sun radiating golden light, the stars shimmering, the moon glowing like a luminous pearl.
I was wide-eyed with awe when Baba reached out and took my hands in his. Looking into my eyes, he said:
“I am the moon. I am the stars. I am the earth. I am the sun.
You, Dehyana, are the moon, you are the stars, you are the earth, you are the sun.”
The dream faded, but its imprint never did.
The Spiritual Meaning of the Dream
For more than three decades, this dream has remained a quiet teacher in my heart—a reminder that separation is an illusion. The spiritual meaning of dreams often lies beyond symbols; it is the direct experience of oneness.
We are not sunbeams broken off from the Sun, wandering through the cosmos—we are the cosmos embodied. The same light that burns in the heart of the sun burns in you, in me, in every one of us. The same wisdom that guides the stars guides your soul. The same rhythms that move the tides of the earth move through your body and your breath.
This is the essence of oneness.
“The Son of God is limitless. There are no limits on his strength, his peace, his joy, nor any attribute his Father gave in his creation.”
— A Course in Miracles
When I heard Baba’s words in that dream, it felt like this truth echoing through my soul. Oneness is not an idea to believe—it is our natural state to remember.
A Reflection for You
Perhaps you, too, have forgotten at times—believing yourself small, flawed, or separate. Take a conscious breath now. Place your hands before you and imagine the cosmos alive in your palms—the earth spinning, the sun blazing, the moon glowing, the stars twinkling.
Would you feel the truth of Baba’s words? Would you remember that you are not in the universe—you are the universe?
The sun, moon, planets, stars, Earth, Milky Way, golden nebulae, galaxies, Orion, Sirius, Pleiades, Andromeda, Zeta Reticuli… you get the point. Though you may think you are in the cosmos, the cosmic joke is that the cosmos—and all that is within it—is in you.
A Practice to Deepen Your Connection
Begin journaling your dreams. Each night before sleep, affirm: “I choose to remember my dream.” Keep a notebook and pen beside your bed. The moment you awaken, write down whatever you recall, even fragments. Over time, the universe will know you are serious, and the messages of your higher self will become clear.
Om Sai Ram.
