Talk is Cheap – So Show Me Your Fruits

By Dehyana

My daughter Jaime is a gifted musician and songwriter. Years ago she wrote a song called Talk Is Cheap and it has stayed with me ever since. Not just because she wrote it — but because every time I look at the world right now, those three words feel more true.

Talk is cheap. We all know it. The living it — that’s the part we lost.

You Know a Tree by Its Fruit

Jesus said something that has always struck me in its simplicity. You know a tree by its fruit. Not by what it says about itself. Not by how it presents itself. By what it actually produces. Healthy tree, healthy fruit. Shrivelled fruit — go look at the roots.

I find that incredibly useful right now. Because we live in an age of extraordinary amounts of talk. Noise, opinions, declarations, personal brands, manifestos. Everyone has a platform and everyone has something to say. And yet — moral character feels increasingly hard to find. Not impossible, but rare enough that when you encounter someone with real integrity you almost do a double take. Oh. This person is actually who they say they are.

Think, Say and Do

Sai Baba used to put it simply. Think, say and do are in alignment. That’s it. That’s integrity. The whole thing in six words. And in a world drowning in talk, that alignment has become almost revolutionary.

Have We Lost Our Moral Compass?

I think many people genuinely have — and I don’t say that as a judgement. A compass doesn’t make you bad for losing it. It just means you’re disoriented. And if you were never given one to begin with, you’re not lost by choice. You’re lost by inheritance.

What Has Happened to the Soil?

Which brings me to the question underneath all of this — why? What has happened to the soil?

Because a tree doesn’t produce shrivelled fruit out of nowhere. Something went wrong at the roots. And when I look honestly at the world we’ve built — the noise, the distraction, the screens, the fractured attention, the nervous systems running on fear and uncertainty — I wonder if we’ve simply made it very hard for character to grow. You can’t build roots in shaking ground. And the ground has been shaking for a long time.

The Kali Yuga and the Dawn to Come

Baba also spoke about the Kali Yuga — the age of darkness that precedes the dawn. Not as an excuse for what’s happening, but as a map. We are not the first people to live through a time when the moral fabric felt thin. And if the ancient wisdom is right, this darkness is not the end game. It’s the threshold.

But we don’t just wait for the dawn. We become it by anchoring the light in all that we say and do, in whatever small way we can.

Walking Your Talk

And that starts with closing the gap. Between what we say and what we do. Between the values we claim and the life we actually live. Between the tree and the fruit.

Go listen to Jaime’s song, Talk Is Cheap. She said in three words what takes most of us paragraphs.

Then ask yourself — what is my tree actually producing right now?

That’s not a guilt trip. It’s just a good question. The kind worth sitting with.

With love,
Dehyana
