Thoth, Mercury, and the Voice Within
How the Ancient Egyptians Understood the Mind
By Dehyana
Long before astrology apps and personality charts, the ancient Egyptians told a different story about the human mind.
They spoke of Thoth — the great scribe of the gods — the one who recorded the movements of heaven and translated divine wisdom into language.
Thoth was the Egyptian god of sacred knowledge, but his deeper meaning was something more intimate than mythology suggests: mathematics, writing, timekeeping, and the mysteries of the cosmos. Yet he represented something deeper than intellect alone.
The Egyptian god Thoth symbolised interpretation itself — the mysterious ability of the mind to translate experience into meaning.
In Egyptian symbolism, Thoth was often connected with the Moon, the quiet observer of cycles and time.
Centuries later, when Greek philosophers encountered Egyptian teachings, they recognised this same archetype in Hermes, the messenger who moves between worlds. They associated this function with the planet Mercury.
In astrology, Mercury governs the mind — how we think, interpret, and communicate.
But if we look more closely, Mercury is doing something even more important.
Mercury is the translator of experience.
Before we form an identity around something… before we react… before we decide what something means… the mind becomes busy interpreting what just happened.
That movement is Mercury.
The Council of Five
In my workshop, I explore this process through what I call The Council of Five — a simple way of observing the inner sequence through which experience becomes reaction.
The Moon feels the experience. Mercury interprets what it thinks happened. The Sun forms an identity around that interpretation. Venus seeks harmony or relief from the feeling that follows. Mars prepares to act on the conclusion the mind has reached.
These movements happen so quickly that we rarely notice them.
Yet when we begin to observe them, something remarkable happens.
We start to realise that what we thought was reality is often simply an interpretation that formed in the mind.
Where Astrology Meets Spiritual Awakening
This is where astrology and deeper spiritual teachings such as A Course in Miracles come together.
The Course reminds us that what disturbs us is not the event itself, but the meaning we have given it — which is precisely what the ancient Egyptians encoded in the symbol of Thoth.
The divine scribe does not simply record events. He records the interpretation of events. And it is that layer — the meaning the mind assigns — where both traditions invite us to look.
Astrology allows us to watch how that meaning forms.
The ancient Egyptians understood that awareness of the mind’s movements brings freedom.
When the inner scribe — our Mercury — is unconscious, the story runs us. When it becomes conscious, we can see the story forming. The moment we see it, something happens where another voice can enter with a calmer voice, a wiser interpretation, and a new way of seeing.
This is where real change begins.
The Inner Temple
The ancient Egyptians honoured this mystery through the symbol of Thoth, the divine scribe who recorded the movements of the heavens. Yet the real temple where this work takes place is not in Egypt. It is within the mind itself.
If you would like to experience the contemplative side of this teaching, you can listen to my guided meditation exploring Thoth and the ancient Egyptian wisdom tradition.
Learning to observe that inner council may be one of the most powerful forms of self-understanding we have.
I’ll be sharing more about this process in my upcoming workshop — where we use astrology as a map for watching these inner movements with remarkable clarity. You’re welcome to join us.
The ancient Egyptians believed the divine scribe recorded the story of the heavens.
Yet perhaps the deeper mystery is this: the scribe is also within us.
Mercury is your storyteller.
And sometimes simply seeing the story… is the beginning of freedom.
With love,
Dehyana
