A Lesson in Self-Reflection
In our journey towards personal growth and spiritual enlightenment, we often encounter challenging concepts that make us question our beliefs and behaviours. At this week’s ACIM & More, we’ll explore the idea that there is no cruelty in God, and therefore, none in us. We’ll look at lesson 170 along with excerpts from Chapter 21: The Function of Reason
The Nature of Attack
One of the fundamental principles we need to understand is that no one attacks without the intent to hurt. This may seem counterintuitive, especially when we consider situations where we believe we’re acting in self-defence. However, it’s crucial to recognise that:
- Attacks always stem from a place of pain or fear
- The belief that cruelty can provide protection is a misconception
- Feeling safe because of cruelty is an illusion
The Ego’s Upside-Down Logic
Often, we justify our actions by claiming we had no choice but to attack because “they attacked first.” Or maybe you’ve heard or even said to a child “this hurts me more than it hurts you”. This reasoning is a perfect example of the ego’s upside-down logic. The ego’s intent is to keep us in a state of:
- Separation
- Fragmentation
- Attack
When we identify solely as a body, we tend to protect it with cruelty, attack, and defence mechanisms.
The Power of Perception
Our perception plays a crucial role in shaping the world we see. It selects and interprets information as directed by our mind. However, it’s essential to remember that we are made in the image and likeness of God, which means at our core, there is no cruelty in us.
When we choose cruelty over truth, it’s because we’re identifying with our physical body and operating from the ego’s perspective.
Embracing Love
The key message to remember is this: God is but love, and therefore, so am I. By aligning ourselves with this truth, we can begin to shift our perception and actions towards love and away from cruelty.
Next Steps for Embracing Love
- Practice self-reflection: Notice when you’re tempted to react with cruelty or attack.
- Question your motives: Ask yourself if your actions are coming from a place of love or fear.
- Choose love consciously: Make a deliberate effort to respond with kindness and understanding.
- Meditate on ACIM Lesson 170: “God is but love, and therefore, so am I.”
- Seek support: Join like-minded individuals who are also on this journey of self-discovery and growth.

Remember, this is an ongoing process. Be patient with yourself as you learn to choose love over cruelty. Your efforts will contribute to creating a more compassionate world, both within and all around you.
