When Life Takes Your Breath Away

By Dehyana

There are seasons in life when we feel inspired. And there are seasons when life seems to knock the breath right out of us.

Maybe you know that feeling. The one where grief you didn’t even know you were carrying finally lifts. Where peace shows up in a body that forgot how to feel peaceful. Where shut down chakras suddenly burst open and your inner greatness comes back online.

When We Stop Breathing Fully

Here’s the truth, loss doesn’t ask for permission — it shows up like a thief in the night. And guess what happens? We stop breathing fully and start breathing just enough to stay alive.

We hold our breath when we’re frightened. We hold it when we’re waiting for life to change. We hold it while trying to stay strong for everyone else. We hold it through grief.

And little by little, we begin to take little bird breaths — like I said, just enough to stay alive, instead of the full, deep breaths of someone actually living.

The Breath Is the Bridge

Breath has a remarkable way of bringing us home. I’m not saying it fixes everything. I’m saying it brings us home because it reminds us that beneath all the fear, beneath the insane thinking and beneath all the stories we’ve told ourselves… life itself is still breathing us.

The breath is the bridge — between fear and peace, between thinking and knowing, between personality and Presence. The bridge between surviving and truly living.

For over thirty years I’ve watched breath do what nothing else quite does. Not by forcing anything. Not by fixing anything. Just by connecting us to our body, heart and soul.

Breathwork for Grief and Emotional Healing

Here’s what a session looks like, if you’ve never done this before.

You lie down. You breathe in a specific way — full, connected, no pause between the in-breath and the out-breath. That’s really the whole technique. But held in the right space, with someone guiding you, that simple breath starts to move things. Old grief. Old fear. Thoughts that got stuck in the body long after the mind moved on. None of it needs to be talked through or figured out. The breath finds it, and meets it, and moves it. Everything is flushed up and out.

People describe what’s on the other side in different ways. Lightness. Peace. Sometimes tears, sometimes laughter, sometimes both. A few call it a natural high. I call it coming home to yourself.

Some Crossings Are Deeper Than Others

I’ve guided this work on a living room floor, and I’ve guided it in some of the most sacred spaces on earth — spaces in Egypt where the breath moves in ways I still don’t try to explain. Wherever it happens, it’s the same bridge…but some crossings are just deeper than others.

A New Moon, A New Beginning

As each New Moon arrives, we’re invited into a new beginning. Not by becoming someone else, but by remembering who we’ve always been. Whole, perfect, complete.

This New Moon I’m returning to offering these gatherings again. You can join:

— August 13 on Zoom, from wherever you are
— In a personal one-on-one BreathWorks session at our centre
— Or gather your own small group, and I’ll come to you
