Rahu & Ketu: What Have You Brought With You?

There are two little symbols in your birth chart that don’t represent planets at all. And yet, when I’m reading a chart, they’re often some of the first places I look. They’re called the North and South Nodes of the Moon.

In Western astrology, we call them the North Node and South Node. In Vedic astrology, you’ll hear the beautiful names Rahu and Ketu.

Technically, they aren’t planets. They’re mathematical points where the orbit of the Moon crosses the apparent path of the Sun. Eclipses occur when a New or Full Moon happens close enough to these points, which is one reason the Nodes have carried so much significance in astrology for thousands of years.

The Story of Rahu and Ketu

But behind Rahu and Ketu is also a wonderful ancient story.

In the Vedic tradition, there is a myth about the nectar of immortality. As the gods and demons struggled over this precious nectar, one of the demons disguised himself and managed to drink some. He was discovered, and Vishnu severed him in two. The head became Rahu and the body became Ketu. But because he had already tasted the nectar of immortality, neither part could die.

I’ve always loved the symbolism of this.

Rahu is the head without the body. Hungry, curious, always reaching toward experience. And because there is no body to contain what it consumes, Rahu can never quite get enough. Ketu is the body without the head. Instinctive, familiar, carrying something already known.

What Do the North and South Nodes Mean in Astrology?

In Western evolutionary astrology, we find a similar conversation in the North and South Nodes. The South Node points toward familiar territory—patterns, abilities, instincts and ways of navigating life that seem to come naturally.

Some astrologers connect this with past lives. Others see ancestral patterns, early conditioning or deeply established habits that can be difficult to recognise, let alone change.

However you understand it, the South Node tells us you’ve been here before. You know something about this terrain.

And I think the South Node sometimes gets a bad reputation.

We’re often told we’re supposed to leave it behind and head toward the North Node. I don’t see it that way. Your South Node contains gifts. You’ve learned something there. You’ve developed abilities and gathered knowledge. The problem comes when we get so comfortable there that we keep doing what we’ve always done.

That’s where the North Node comes in.

The North Node describes territory that isn’t quite as familiar. We have to grow into it, and at first it can feel awkward because we don’t know that territory nearly as well.

I think of the North Node as an evolutionary direction. It points toward something we’re learning in this lifetime.

But here’s the part I find fascinating: we don’t arrive at the North Node empty-handed.

We bring the South Node with us. I’ve written before about how the Lunar Nodes can help us understand our soul’s evolutionary path and the deeper call toward what we’re here to become.

The North and South Nodes Are an Axis

I was thinking about this recently when another ancient image came to mind—the Ouroboros, the serpent eating its own tail.

The Ouroboros isn’t the traditional symbol of Rahu and Ketu, but there’s something about that image that works for me. The serpent doesn’t throw away its tail to reach its head. It’s one body.

And so are the Nodes.

They’re always directly opposite each other in the birth chart. They’re an axis. So I’ve never understood the idea that we’re supposed to somehow get rid of the South Node and become the North Node.

We need both.

What we’ve already learned has something to do with where we’re going.

How to Read the North and South Nodes in Your Birth Chart

And this is why I don’t read the Nodes by sign alone.

Let’s say someone tells you, “My North Node is in Aries.”

Great. That’s a beginning.

But where is that North Node in the chart? Which house? What’s happening around it? And because Mars rules Aries, now I want to meet Mars. Where is Mars in the birth chart? What sign is it in? What house? What planets is it connected to?

Then I’ll look across the chart to the South Node. What sign and house is it in? What planet rules that sign? Where is that planet? What other planets are connected to the nodal axis?

Now we’re getting somewhere.

Astrology was never meant to be reduced to one placement. A birth chart is a living system. Everything speaks to everything else.

For me, this is also the deeper purpose of astrology: to use it to see ourselves more clearly.

The planets connected to the Nodes can tell us a great deal about how this particular story is playing out. And the South Node can hold an ability we’ve become so used to that we don’t even recognise it as a gift anymore.

That’s important.

Because you don’t necessarily need to get rid of what you find there. You may need to use it differently.

North Node in Sagittarius, South Node in Gemini: An Example

A South Node in Gemini, for example, may already know how to gather information, make connections, ask questions and move between different ideas. If the North Node is in Sagittarius, we don’t throw Gemini in the bin. That would be ridiculous.

We take everything Gemini knows and begin asking: What do I actually believe? What has meaning? What truth have I discovered through all this information?

Now the South Node has somewhere to go.

And this is why knowing that your North Node is in Aries, Cancer, Sagittarius or any other sign is only the beginning of the story.

Find the house. Find its ruler. Find the South Node and do the same thing. Then look at the whole axis and see what else in the chart is connected to it.

Where am I supposed to be going?

Ask:

What have I brought with me?
