Pluto’s Polarity Point — The Other Side of the Story

In my last blog I wrote about the Lunar Nodes and how the South Node can show us patterns we’re deeply familiar with, while the North Node points toward something we’re learning to develop. Well, there’s another polarity in the birth chart that I find just as fascinating.

Pluto. More specifically, the Pluto Polarity Point.

What Is the Pluto Polarity Point?

The Pluto Polarity Point is the point exactly opposite Pluto in your birth chart.

If you’re not familiar with it, it’s actually quite simple to find. Locate Pluto in your birth chart and look directly opposite it. That’s your Pluto Polarity Point. If Pluto is in Leo, the polarity point is Aquarius. If Pluto is in Scorpio, it’s Taurus. The house is directly opposite as well. But finding it is the easy part. Understanding what it means is where things get interesting.

What Does the Pluto Polarity Point Mean?

In Evolutionary Astrology, Pluto is connected to the deeper evolutionary patterns of the Soul, particularly those patterns we’ve relied upon for emotional security. I’ve written before about how the Lunar Nodes can help us understand our soul’s evolutionary path, and Pluto adds another layer to that story.

And I think the words emotional security are really important here because we don’t necessarily hang onto something because it’s good for us. Sometimes we hang onto it because it’s familiar. We know how to do it. We know that road. We’re familiar with that version of ourselves, even if we’re miserable there. Then along comes Pluto and starts shaking things up.

This is often when some of Pluto’s more difficult characteristics can show up. We become controlling, defensive, suspicious, jealous, possessive or downright stubborn because something that has made us feel secure is changing. Life is clearly saying, this isn’t working anymore, while we’re hanging onto the doorframe saying, Yes it is.

The Pluto Polarity Point shows us another direction.

Your Pluto Polarity Point Is Only Part of the Story

But just as we discovered with the Lunar Nodes, we can’t read one point in a birth chart and assume we have the whole story.

What house is Pluto in? What aspects does it make? Where is the ruler of Pluto’s sign? Are there planets at the Polarity Point or making strong aspects to it? Where is its ruler?

And now we can bring those Lunar Nodes we were just talking about back into the picture. Where is the South Node? Where is its ruler? Where is the North Node and its ruler? How do they connect with Pluto?

Now we’re getting somewhere.

This is one of the things I’ve always appreciated about Jeffrey Wolf Green’s work. The Pluto Polarity Point isn’t treated as an isolated destination. Pluto, its Polarity Point, the Lunar Nodes, their planetary rulers and the aspects between them begin to tell a much larger evolutionary story.

And no two stories are going to be exactly alike.

Pluto in Leo in the 2nd house is a very different story from Pluto in Leo in the 11th. Pluto square Saturn isn’t going to express in the same way as Pluto trine Jupiter. Put a planet directly on the Polarity Point and we have something else to consider. This is where astrology gets fascinating because we’re no longer reading keywords.

We’re looking at a life.

Where have I become deeply identified? What do I instinctively reach for when I need to feel secure? What happens when that security is threatened? What other capacities are trying to develop?

Pluto in Aquarius and the Leo Polarity Point

Now widen the lens and look at Pluto moving through Aquarius. Aquarius speaks to groups, communities, networks, technology, innovation, disruption, freedom and new ways of doing things. My goodness, we don’t have to look very far to see that happening.

Look at AI. Look at how quickly technology is changing our lives. Look at the way old systems and institutions are being questioned. We’re connected to millions of people and yet plenty of people are lonely as all get out.

Welcome to Pluto in Aquarius.

And sitting directly opposite Aquarius is Leo. While we’re racing into this extraordinary Aquarian future, Leo reminds us not to lose the heart. What happens to individuality when everything becomes about the collective? What happens to creativity when technology can create something for us in seconds? What happens to human connection when most of our connecting happens through a screen? And what happens to our own voice when we’re constantly hearing everybody else’s?

Aquarius may be asking us to rethink the future, but Leo reminds us that there’s still a human being living in it. And I don’t think we’re supposed to choose one over the other. That’s not how polarity works.

The Other Side of the Story

The same is true in our own charts. The Pluto Polarity Point isn’t saying, stop being this and become that. Our Pluto placement tells us something important about where we’ve been, what we’ve developed and where we’ve learned to find security. But we can’t continue growing by endlessly repeating what we already know.

At some point Pluto asks the uncomfortable question: Are you willing to develop another part of yourself? That’s where the Polarity Point becomes so interesting.It opens the other side of the story.

And God only knows, Pluto has never been particularly interested in keeping us comfortable.
